Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of health and longevity that dates back more than 5,000 years. It is the world's first holistic form of preventative medicine. It is comprised of two Sanskrit words, ‘Ayu’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning knowledge or science. Ayurveda then is the Science of Life, and is not only limited to the body and physical symptoms, but encompasses the inter-relationship between ones body, mind, senses, soul and the environment. Ayurveda practices the theory of balance. Health is a state of balance, and disease is a state of imbalance. Health can only be achieved by living in harmony with our individual constitutions made up of a combination of the 5 elements and 3 Doshas Therefore the path to optimum health is different and unique for each person.

In other words, it can only happen when our constitutional doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha - are in balance and perform their function harmoniously at all levels and within all systems. Ayurveda's primary aim then, is the prevention of imbalance through a supportive regime that includes nutritional and lifestyle guidelines, along with ayurvedic herbs, treatments, cleansing and rejuvenating programs.
